A close-up of natural skin texture on a hand
Notes from Moonflower

Fall always sounds like it should be good for your skin. The weather starts cooling off, the worst of the summer heat is behind us, and suddenly we are not sweating through sunscreen before lunch. In theory, everything should feel easier.

And then your skin starts feeling tight, flaky, irritated or just a little off.

That is pretty normal. Seasonal changes can affect the way skin behaves, and in Austin, fall is rarely a clean transition from hot to cool. We can have chilly mornings, warm afternoons, dry air, indoor air conditioning and random stretches of summer weather all in the same week. Your skin is still dealing with sun exposure and heat while also adjusting to changing humidity and more time indoors.

One of the biggest things I notice this time of year is dehydration. Skin can still be producing oil while also feeling tight underneath, which is why reaching for the heaviest moisturizer you can find is not always the answer. Sometimes the skin needs better hydration, sometimes it needs a richer moisturizer, and sometimes it needs fewer exfoliating products rather than more.

Fall is also when people tend to get excited about bringing back all of their stronger products. Retinoids, acids, peels and exfoliating treatments start reappearing in routines because the summer sun feels less intense. That can be a good thing when it is done intentionally, but this is also when I see people go from zero to sixty and then wonder why their skin suddenly feels irritated.

Cooler weather does not make the skin barrier indestructible. If your face already feels tight, stingy or reactive, adding more exfoliation is probably not going to improve things. Flaky skin is not always skin that needs to be scrubbed. Sometimes it is dehydrated. Sometimes it is irritated. Sometimes it has already had too much.

That is why I like to slow down and look at the whole picture. How does your skin feel after cleansing? Has your moisturizer stopped feeling like enough? Are you suddenly getting dry patches? Are you using three different exfoliating products because they all sounded like a good idea separately?

Those details matter more than the fact that the calendar says October.

Fall can be a great time to reset your routine and reintroduce stronger treatments more thoughtfully. It can also be a good time for a facial because we can look at how your skin handled summer and what it needs now instead of assuming everyone needs the same seasonal treatment.

At Moonflower Skin Lab in South Austin, I do not automatically reach for the strongest peel because fall has arrived. Some skin needs exfoliation. Some skin needs hydration. Some skin needs barrier support first. Sometimes it needs a combination of those things, just not all at once.

Seasonal skincare does not have to be complicated. Pay attention to how your skin actually feels, make changes slowly and give it time to respond.

Your skin usually tells you a lot if you stop trying to outsmart it.
