A close-up of natural skin texture on a hand
Notes from Moonflower

By October, your skin has usually been through a lot.

Months of heat, sun exposure, sweat, sunscreen, air conditioning, travel and probably at least a few days where your skincare routine was whatever you could manage before falling into bed. Then fall arrives and suddenly there is a strong urge to start over.

I actually think October is a great time for a skincare reset, but not because your face needs to be detoxed from summer. Skin does not need a seasonal cleanse. What it does need is for you to notice what changed.

Maybe the moisturizer that felt perfect in July suddenly does not feel like enough. Maybe you spent all summer keeping exfoliation minimal and now your skin feels congested. Maybe you went in the opposite direction and exfoliated constantly because you felt oily. Maybe pigmentation is more noticeable after months of sun exposure.

Or maybe your skin is doing completely fine and does not need a dramatic overhaul at all.

A reset does not mean throwing everything away and starting from scratch. Sometimes it just means taking a closer look at what you are actually doing. Which products are you using consistently? Which ones are sitting untouched? What feels good on your skin? What stings? What did you buy because someone online told you it was life-changing?

Those questions tend to tell me much more than a trendy seasonal routine.

October is also when people start thinking about the holidays, events and family photos, which is usually when the panic skincare begins. Suddenly everyone wants to fix texture, pigmentation, breakouts and dehydration at the same time.

Skin generally responds much better to consistency than panic.

If you want to work on something before the holidays, starting earlier gives you more time and more options. We can adjust a routine slowly. We can see how your skin responds. We can add treatments when they actually make sense instead of trying to do everything the week before an event.

That is one of the reasons an October facial can be useful. It gives us a chance to look at your skin in its current state and figure out what it needs now, not what worked six months ago.

At Moonflower Skin Lab in South Austin, a fall facial might include hydration, gentle exfoliation, barrier support, lymphatic massage or a more advanced treatment when appropriate. It depends entirely on the skin in front of me.

That is the whole point.

I do not think a seasonal facial should be a prewritten recipe that gets applied to everyone because the calendar changed. I want to know what your summer looked like, what you are using at home and what your skin has been doing lately.

Has it started feeling tight after cleansing? Are you suddenly more congested? Is there a dark spot that seems more noticeable than it did in June? Is your current routine simply not working the way it used to?

Then we build from there.

October is a good time to reset because there is still plenty of year left. You do not need to fix everything before Halloween, and you definitely do not need to attack your skin because the holidays are coming.

You just need a plan that makes sense for the skin you have right now.
